Nothing productive really, but Chipotle produced a good, short video about a pig farmer who industrialized and then went back to his original ways. Thought I’d share.

NorthStar Bison

March 13, 2011

Summary:

NorthStar Bison is a premier producer of grassfed Bison, Beef and Lamb who surprisingly is a fully run family operation.  The owners still run and operate the farm and all the kid’s work for various facets of the business whether it’s shipping and receiving, herd management or just helping out where they can (for the younger one).  NorthStar Bison seems to take great care in the treatment of it’s animals, making sure they are grassfed; and they even purchased a processing plant which allows them to kill their animals in the field, and thus stress free making for a better quality meat (and a stress-free ending for the animal).

Oh, and did we mention they sell Ostrich and Elk?  Now that is a pleasant, not so easy to find surprise!

Disclaimer:  We here at NW Farm Review just recently (yesterday) cooked up some ground bison for Bison Burgers.  We will admit that it was quite tasty and it won’t be the last time we purchase from NorthStar Bison.

  • Grassfed Beef
  • Grassfed Lamb

Double R Ranch

March 9, 2011

Summary:

The Double R Ranch (Not to be confused with the Double R Ranch in Michigan) is a Washington based Ranch who’s beef products can be found at larger retailers in the area (Confirmed at Top Food & Drug and Haggen stores).  They have been around since 1968 and is still stated as family owned, though there is little mention of the current owners.

The Double R Ranch is a large farm that is primarily based on a 100,000+ farm in the Okanagan (North, North East) region of Washington State; though they do state that some cattle do not originate from this ranch, but don’t specify what other cattle sources exist.

Willows Edge Farm

February 8, 2011

Summary:

Willows Edge Farm is a local farm that seems to specialize in poultry and horses.  NWFarm Review focuses on the poultry and eggs as horse care is a wee bit outside our niche.  The farm treats their animals with the utmost respect in an attempt to give them a decent life, devoid of stress.  And as we all know, that kind of life makes for premium meat, and premium eggs.  Due to their practices and quantity available, their eggs and meat is in such high demand that they can be often out of stock for non-regular customers.

Products:

  • Pork (Half/Whole Hog)
  • Chicken
  • Eggs

Standards:

  • Pastured Free Range
  • No Antibiotics, Hormones, MSG
  • No Teeth, Ear, Beak cutting (animal mutilation)

Tillamook

January 30, 2011

Summary:

John here, and I will admit, Tillamook has had a special place in my heart for many years.  I don’t know how many gallons of yogurt of theirs I’ve eaten over the years, nor how many pounds of cheese (I don’t buy smaller than 2lb bricks).  I will personally admit however that I rarely buy their yogurt now as it contains too much added sugar and preservatives.  Their cheese however is still consumed mightily.

Overall, Tillamook seems to have a focus on cow health, they talk about reducing cow stress because it affects the quality of milk.  They talk about the various grasses and pastures used by the various local farmers (~110 different dairy farms).  So if those farms have quality standards, then so does Tillamook brand products.  Tillamook states that all farms are required to adhere to their strict standards of animal and milk care.

Products:

  • Cheese (Flavor Variety)
  • Ice Cream (Flavor Variety)
  • Yogurt (Flavor Variety)
  • Sour Cream (Normal, Light, FatFree, ‘Natural’)
  • Butter (Salted and Unsalted)

Standards:

  • No Hormones
  • No Antibiotics
  • Feed is a mixture of forage, grasses, grains and corn silage.
  • Co-op, so different farms may have different standards, but seems to have many grass fed cattle.

Stiebrs Farms

January 22, 2011

Summary:

Stiebrs Farms appears to be a well run, family farm since 1953.  Since the founding they have grown to employ about 70 people and produce high quality eggs, beef, and hen feed.  We have personally purchased, and deliciously enjoyed their Go-Organic Omega-3, Certified Humane, free range, Certified Organic eggs.  Basically an egg with nearly every “good” certification.

The only downfall we can see here is that from the pictures available on their website (I’d recommend their online “farm tour”, which doesn’t allow direct links) the chicken’s are not quite Pasture Raised, but considering that the hens have plenty of space outdoors and access to a fully organic, made by the Stiebrs Farms feed we aren’t really complaining.

Products:

  • Organic Omega-3 Eggs (Large Brown)
  • Organic Eggs (Brown M,L, XL, Jumbo)
  • Cage-Free Eggs (M,L,XL White & Brown)
  • Cage-Free Omega-3 Eggs (Large White)
  • Fry-N-Try Eggs (Jumbo, AA, White & Brown)
  • Duck Eggs
  • Organic, Grass-Fed Beef
  • Organic Feed

Smith Brothers Farms

January 11, 2011

Summary:

Smith Brothers Farms has a soft spot with both Heather and I.  Despite growing up in different regions in Washington, we both grew up on Smith Brothers milk.  It is, was and will most likely continue to be simply delicious.  Before the days of “USDA Organic” milk Smith Brothers Farms distributed some of the best quality milk I can remember.  From reviews of friends & family it only seems that their tradition as continued to produce quality milk, whether organic or not.

That being said, we do not know for sure what their current practices are for their non-organic products and will need to be verified.

Products:

  • Organic Eggs (Brown XL)
  • Eggs (White XL)
  • Butter
  • Sour Cream
  • Milk (Whole, 2%, 1%, Fat Free, Acidophilus, Chocolate Milk)
  • Organic Milk (Whole, 2%, 1%, Fat Free)
